Exercise and Fitness


Pilates A floor-based exercise class which focuses on core strength, balance and flexibility. Bring a mat; wear comfortable but not baggy clothing. Register for each session by the month. Instructor: Jim Duncan.

Strength Training for Osteoporosis Prevention This class is for those seeking to build strong bones and muscle. Exercises are done standing, sitting and on floor, but can be modified where necessary to meet your needs. Bring a mat and light handweights. Instructor: Jim DeMeis

Stretch and Bend This moderately paced exercise class is a favorite! Includes stretching, flexibility and balance work, strength and conditioning work. Bring a mat or towel. Instructor: Mary Sniekus.

Interested in Tai Chi? Woodbury Parks and Rec. sponsors a Tai Chi program held here at the Senior Center on Wednesday mornings. For more information, contact Parks and Rec at 263-3113.


Sit and Fit: A Seated Workout
This is a great class for those who haven't been exercising for awhile, or those with balance or flexibility issues. We use music, balls, and stretch resistance bands to get a great full-body workout from a seated position. Each class also includes balance training and core strength. A great re-entry class for the person who wants to start getting fit, and a good place to meet people too.
Dates: ongoing, Tues and Thurs (bus transportation available), begins 9/15

Fitness Room The Fitness Room is open to all who want to work out on a regular basis. Equipment includes 2 treadmills, 2 NU-step recumbent cross-trainers, wind-resistant fitness bikes/ upper body ergometers and new to our fitness room is an upper body pulling machine. Physician signature required. Stop by the office to pick up your information and registration packet.

Fall Highlights

Columbus Day weekend opener
Friday October 9th at noon. Pasta Bar and Games Party! Come to the center and enjoy either alfredo primavera sauce or classic tomato sauce (or both) meatballs, garlic bread, salad and dessert for just $3.00.Then stay for the afternoon and try your hand at Bunco, scrabble or other many card or board games. Call 263-2828 to sign up. This will be a lot of fun..don't miss it.


Glimpses of American Art
Thursday October 8th at 11:00 am. A program with Janet Grey, docent at New Britain Museum of American Art. Learn about the best of American artists.This is also a preview for our upcoming 5th week trip to the museum.

5th Week Trip to New Britain Museum of American Art
Wednesday October 28th from 9:00 am-3 p.m. $10.00 plus lunch on your own at the Museum Cafe. This is a special private docent-led tour of the best of the museum, then break for lunch and enjoy the museum on your own in the afternoon. Call to sign up 263-2828



Have Lunch with the Candidates
Have lunch or just come to hear the candidates speak. Lunch is at 12 noon, Call by October 8th if you plan to have lunch, donation of $2.50, or just come for the speeches at 12:30pm. Tuesday October 20th- Jerry Stomski and running mate Barbara Perkinson. Thursday October 22nd- Paul Hinckley and running mate George Hale.

Oktoberfest Potluck
mmm good. Come join us for a good time celebration.We'll provide grilled sausages and Edith's famous kraut salad. You bring a potluck side to share. You must sign up to attend to ensure we purchase enough food for everyone. Call 263-2828



Fall Photo Show
If you are the type to snap a photo, we'd love to see your work! Our Fall Snapshot Show is a chance to share your favorite images with others. Do bring in your snapshots by October 13th. All photos will be returned. The show runs through the 30th of October.

Cooking class with Marianne Desilva
Monday November 16th. Come and enjoy the wonderful cooking talents of Marianne. This month she will focus on "Pumpkin Fervor" from 10:30- 1:30. Space is limited so call for reservations 263-2828 Fee is $10.00

The "Center's got Talent" show and Pizza Party
What can we say...Don't miss this . Friday November 13th at 1:pm. All of you have talent, bring us your ideas and we will help you put it all together. Talk to your friends and sign up by October 15th. We are looking for joke tellers, musicians, dancers, singers, actors,readers of poetry, kazoo players, spoon players, and more. Join us for a pizza party following the show. Sign up for the pizza party at the office by November 11th. Call 263-2828 Bring us your talent .

Emergency! What to do in case you are in a motor vehicle accident
Thursday November 19th at 11:00 am. Come listen to our very own Fire Chief, Janet Morgan and Suzanne Cooper, EMT with Woodbury Ambulance speak. They will bring equipment and talk about what you can do if you witness an accident, you are in an accident, or if you come upon an accident. Bring questions for Janet and Suzanne. They will be glad to answer them for you.

New Programs

Breakfast for your Brain
Fridays at 10:30 am through January 2010. The fee is $1.00 per week. This class has been going on for a couple of weeks. Everyone loves it! Join us an hour a week to learn what you can do to stay mentally fit. Just like eating breakfast is good for your body, this class is good for your brain. Areas that we will be focusing on include: nutrition, how your brain works, humor, using visuals to stimulate, left-right brain activities, listening as a brain enhancer, word games and memory building exercises. Come and enjoy the company.

Music for fun and wellbeing
Mondays from October 19th through November 23rd. This starts at 1:00pm. The fee is $18.00 . Join this supportive music-making group, led by instructor Julie Cook, to explore African drums, rain stick, singing bowl and other easy- to-play instruments. reap the health benefits of lower strees through social music-making, drumming and expressing yourself. A minimum of 8 students must register to hold this class. Call 263-2828 to sign up

Servicemen Holiday Cards and Phone card Drive
We will be sending holiday cards and phone cards (available at post office) to a platoon currently stationed in Iraq. Please take this moment to wish a soldier a Happy Holiday. Drop off your cards to the office by Friday October 30th.

The Woodbury Biggest Loser Weight Loss Challenge
First meeting is Wednesday October 21st at 2 pm. Get healthier and avoid those extra holiday pounds. Have fun and get support. Lose weight your way with some motivational help and win some valuable prizes. Weekly weigh-ins begin in November and all those who meet their weight loss goals in 20 weeks will share in the winnings. Come to our first meeting, you won't regret it.





Writing Your Life Stories
Everyone has a story to tell. Come tell yours in this 8 - week lifewriting class. Learn how to capture those special moments in writing, get past false starts, and compile a personal memoir the people in your life will enjoy reading! Includes information on compilation and editing, options for using technology to enhance your writing, and even publishing your memoir. Fridays beginning in September.

Garden Committee wrap up session
Monday November 2nd- Garden wrap up session at 2:00 pm. Come and discuss our wonderful garden this year. What a success it was ! We can't wait to see what we can do next year.


Local Trips
5th week trip to Cabela's
Monday November 30th. This will be a really fun and memorable trip. Cabela's outdoor world has something for everyone. Space is limited make sure you call and sign up early. Call our office for details and fee. 263-2828

Dine Around
Wednesday November 4th- The Silver City Bistro at Wilcox Tech. High School in Meriden. On the first Wednesday of each month enjoy this opportunity to dine at different restaurants that are affordable for seniors. To allow everyone an equal opportunity to participate in Dine Around, sign ups will only be taken after the 15th of each month, and you must make your reservation.

Men's haircuts are available at the center. Lynn telesco, licensed barber, will be here the first Thursday of each month. Appointments are needed. Fee- $10.00 Call 263-2828

Mondays 2-4 through November 23, Whether you ar new to this fascinating hobby or already well on your way to documenting your family history, you will love this program. Learn tips for a successful search from our resident genealogist, Penny Hartzell, and then be prepared to work at your convenience. Ancestry. com is available in our Computer lab

Foot Care Clinic
Professional routine podiatry care is available at the center for your convenience. Appointments are scheduled the third Wednesday of each month in the afternoon. The cost is $10.00 per appointment, for 6 appointments per year. Bus transportation is available. Some restrictions do apply. No insurance billing and no diabetic care avaiable. Call 263-2828

Senior Council Meeting
The first thursday of every month. Everyone is welcome to attend. Be a part of a group of involved senior citizens interested in the progress, operation, well-being and information concerning the senior center. Cookies by the pound coming in December. We are always looking for volunteers
